Google is releasing a new Go API for protobuf, which breaks gogo/protobuf, but the project is now looking for new maintainers.

It is sad to see people are just switching from gogo/protobuf rather than helping, but I would do the same. Maintaining an RPC binding cannot be done in my spare time…

Casey Neistat is back, apparently. He has started a daily vlog again!

If you don’t know Casey Neistat, he is the vlogger. While he wouldn’t be the first vlogger on the earth, he could be considered as the godfather of modern, DSLR-holding vlogging.

I’m unsure what he would do. The last “368” season was ended abruptly by Casey’s move from New York City. Is the space still open? What was the project with Jack Conte? But since this is a vlog, not a TV series, I don’t think these cliffhangers would be answered. I’m fine with that. I’m happy to see Casey’s vlog again anyway.

The rest of this post is my Casey Neistat bookmarks :)

Meta

I like his “meta” backstage-ish vlogs.

Studio

His studio is great.

You might have seen NODE, or its domain n-o-d-e.net on Hacker News or some other link aggregators. They are making cool hardware projects from Raspberry Pi mini server to Casio’s cheap watch mod.

In addition to the cool hardware projects, they have zines.

I’ve downloaded the PDF version of the zines and reading them right now. They are good. The theme is like Make: magazine, but has more decentralized, privacy-aware, self-sufficient and “hacker” vibe.

I’ve watched Netflix’s “The Social Dilemma”, a documentary about the negative impact of online social networking services.

I’ve been into this topic for years. I’ve read Cal Newport’s “Digital Minimalism”, and Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky’s “Make Time”. I’ve watched Netflix’s “The Great Hack”. I’ve been listening to Your Undivided Attention podcast. Tristan Harris, one of the hosts of the podcast is playing a key role in the documentary.

So, to be fair, watching this documentary is pretty much confirming my biases.

The documentary is overall good. It is not new for me due to the reasons above. That “three people control the pity boy” part is a bit cheesy though.

It is shallow about the way to deal with social networking services. Probably because some of the people who appeared in the documentary call government regulations. While I can agree we are powerless compared to big-tech companies, I’m not so sure what would be effective regulations.

Also regarding kids, I was helped by the internet when I was a teenager. No, my parents were great, but I didn’t like schools much at that time. Seeing good parents make the internet away from their kids make me sad.

This is my 40th post of #100DaysToOffload challenge. The pace is becoming a bit slower this time (10 posts / 30 days).

Less Rants

Looking back, I have written too much about things I don’t like. Despite the fact that I now have multiple kids and gray hairs, I’m not that old, or at least I don’t want to be. It is too early to be a grumpy developer.

So, I will write about things I like. There are a few, I suppose.
