oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites.
Lingr には YouTube のビデオの URI をはるとその場で展開する という機能がある。あるいは、はてなの http 記法でニコニコ動画貼付 とか。
oEmbed は、この類の機能を汎用的に (各サービス毎にコードをかき分けずに) 実現できる仕様らしい。
